What is veganism?
Veganism is a philosophy of life that seeks to avoid the exploitation and suffering of animals as a result of human activity. This philosophy is characterized by abstaining from all foods of animal origin, as well as from the use of articles of clothing or accessories that come from animals, such as leather, wool or beauty products that contain ingredients of animal origin. . Veganism also implies the rejection of the use of animals for experimental purposes. Finally, this philosophy seeks awareness and respect for the life of animals, and therefore, the promotion of a lifestyle centered on respect for nature.
History of veganism
The word "veganism" originated in 1944, when the founder of the British Vegetarian Society, Donald Watson, coined the term to refer to the non-consumption and non-use of animal products. Veganism has gained a lot of strength over the years, and has become a global movement of people who adopt a lifestyle free of animal exploitation.
The history of veganism began with a series of vegetarian movements, which were created in the early 19th century. These movements were driven by awareness of animal rights, and the idea that eating meat was morally wrong. In 1806, the English writer Percy Shelley published his poem "A Vindication of Natural Diet", one of the first written works encouraging vegetarianism. At the end of the same century, the American writer Henry S. Salt created the Vegetarian Association, which promoted vegetarianism through a series of publications and conferences.
In the 1940s, Donald Watson and other members of the British Vegetarian Society decided to break away and create a more radical vegetarian movement. These activists argued that vegetarianism was not enough to protect animals from human exploitation, and they created a new term to describe their movement: veganism. The first definition of veganism was published by Watson in 1944, and it was the first time the word was used to refer to a lifestyle and the free consumption of animal products.
Since then, veganism has taken a lot of strength. In recent years, the movement has expanded thanks to the dissemination of information through the internet and social networks. Additionally, there has been an increase in vegan products available in supermarkets, making veganism more accessible to people.
